When starting NovaBACKUP, I get the error, "Unable to initialize SDS kernel"

If you get the "Unable to initialize SDS kernel" error on start up of NovaBACKUP and cannot get in to the main software interface do the following: First of all look at your Windows Services list (The command to run from Start Menu -> Run or Search box is "services.msc", once the Services application is running for "NovaStor NovaBACKUP Backup/Copy Engine" service in the alphabetical list of services.  Check the "Status" column for that service to make sure it is showing as "Running" Status.  If you cannot start the service then go ahead and follow.

When this occurs the best way to resolve this issue it to run a Repair installation.

Locate the Setup-NB*.exe which matches the version of your NovaBACKUP software that is currently installed run the application.

During the installation, select the Repair option, this may be in the "Maintenance" area of the setup program if same version of NovaBACKUP is detected as being installed.

If the Repair function does not correct the problem, try un-installing and re-installing the NovaBACKUP software.  If that does not work you will have to perform a clean un-install of NovaBACKUP using this step-by-step guide.
 

1. Close the NovaBackup software.

2. Press [Ctrl], [Alt], and [Del] keys simultaneously to open the Task Manager window.

3. Verify the novabackupx.exe, nsctrl.exe, and nsservice.exe processes aren't active. Select each of them and select End Process / End Task if they are still active.

Delete All traces of NovaBACKUP including:

On XP and 2003
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\NovaStor\
C:\Program Files\NovaStor\
or
C:\Program Files (x86)\NovaStor\

On Vista , Win7, Win2008:
C:\ProgramData\NovaStor\
C:\Program Files\NovaStor\
or
C:\Program Files (x86)\NovaStor
\

Run Regedit and delete:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Nsservice

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NovaStor

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\NovaStor


Reboot the computer.

Please exclude NovaStor Directories from Active Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware Scanning:

On XP and 2003
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\NovaStor\
C:\Program Files\NovaStor\
or
C:\Program Files (x86)\NovaStor\



On Vista , Win7, Win2008:
C:\ProgramData\NovaStor\
C:\Program Files\NovaStor\
