Separate SCSI devices on different adapters

SCSI devices of type disc and of type tape/autoloader shall not be attached to the same (virtual) SCSI adapter.

Use the NovaStor tool hiscsi.exe to obtain the location of the SCSI devices. Example:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Novastor\datacenter\Hiback\Tape>hiscsi -scan

HISCSI SCSI-bus tool (C) 1990-2011 NovaStor GmbH
Name C Device Vendor Product
---------- - ------- ---------- ------------
A1B0S0L0 Y Disk VMware Virtual disk
A1B0S1L0 Y Tape0 QUANTUM ULTRIUM 4
A1B0S2L0 N Changer0 DELL PV-124T
\\.\SCSI1: with (3) devices

C:\Program Files (x86)\Novastor\datacenter\Hiback\Tape>

The SCSI addresses show the adapter number (A#), the bus number (B#), the SCSI ID (S#) and the LUN (L#).

In this example it is obvious that a disc, a tape, and an autoloader device share the same adapter 0.This configuration will definitely lead to problems in SCSI communication between the backup server and the tape device.

Separate the SCSI devices onto at least 2 different (virtual) adapters, so that the hiscsi command shows an output like this:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Novastor\datacenter\Hiback\Tape>hiscsi -scan

HISCSI SCSI-bus tool (C) 1990-2011 NovaStor GmbH
Name C Device Vendor Product
---------- - ------- ---------- ------------
A1B0S0L0 Y Disk VMware Virtual disk
\\.\SCSI1: with (1) devices

Name C Device Vendor Product
---------- - ------- ---------- ------------
A2B0S2L0 Y Tape0 QUANTUM ULTRIUM 4
A2B0S2L1 N Changer0 DELL PV-124T
\\.\SCSI2: with (2) devices

C:\Program Files (x86)\Novastor\datacenter\Hiback\Tape>
