================================================================================ BARE-METAL RECOVERY INSTRUCTIONS (C) 1990-2013 NovaStor GmbH ================================================================================ Bare-Metal Recovery is a utility for recovering machines from an existing BMR image. It is compatible with Vista SP1 or higher versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system. This guide will show you how to create a WindowsPE-LiveCD or a bootable USB thumb drive for Bare-Metal Recovery. Please follow these step-by-step instructions to prepare your BMR Recovery: 1.) Run the VBS-Script "CreateWinPE__.vbs" located at $(DC_HOME)\Hiback\vss\bmr\pe-build Make sure you run the script that matches your target machine's (i.e. the machine you would like to recover) platform. If you need to add any drivers (e.g. for RAID-Controller, NIC, etc.) to the WindowsPE-Image, place them in the following directory: $(DC_HOME)\Hiback\vss\bmr\pe-build\resources\build\addon\\drivers The drivers will be included in the resulting recovery medium. The script will check for any installed versions of the Microsoft Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK) or the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK), which is required for the recovery disc creation (one of them). Depending on the OS version of the machine where the BMR image was taken from, different versions of the AIK/ADK will be neccessary. a) Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 require WAIK Version 1.1 supplied for download at: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=9085 Direct download URL: http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/c/d/9cdfa30e-5901-40e4-b6bf-4a0086ea0a6a/6001.18000.080118-1840-kb3aikl_en.iso b) Windows 7 (or higher) and Windows Server 2008 R2 (or higher) require WAIK Version 2.0 supplied for download at: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5753 Direct download URL: http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/E/9/8E9BBC64-E6F8-457C-9B8D-F6C9A16E6D6A/KB3AIK_EN.iso c) For Windows 8 (or higher) and Windows Server 2012 (or higher), the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit is recommended, which is supplied for download at: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30652 Direct download URL: http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/9/F/99F5E440-5EB5-4952-9935-B99662C3DF70/adk/adksetup.exe This kit is also suitable for Windows 7 based systems, especially when UEFI hardware is involved. d) For Windows 10 (or higher) and Windows Server 2016 (or higher), the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit for Windows 10 is recommended, which is supplied for download at: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/dn913721.aspx Direct download URL: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=526740 https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=823089 2.) Once the script is finished you will find two new files in $(DC_HOME)\Hiback\vss\bmr\pe-build: a) BMR___.iso Use this disc ISO-image if you want to recover the target machine using a Recovery CD. Open the image with a CD-ROM burning software of your choice and follow the instructions. b) BMR___.zip Use this zip archive if you want to recover the target machine using a USB thumb drive: 1.) Unpack the archive 2.) Right-click on "createRecoveryStick.cmd" 3.) Select "Run as Administrator" 4.) Follow the instructions 3.)
