Error 193 on service startup
NovaBACKUP DataCenter
Last Updated: Aug 28, 2013 10:31AM PDT
On Windows 2003 the Hiback Service refused to start.
The error message from services.msc is
Error 193: 0xc1
The root cause is a blank in the image pathname of the hiserv.exe executable in the registry data.
The original pathname was
D:\Program Files\Novastor\datacenter\Hiback\hiserv.exe
Here are the steps to fix the problem:
1. Windows Start -> Run -> regedt32.exe
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HISERV
3. On Image Path, [right-mouse] Modify.
4. In the Value Data textbox write the short pathname, i.e.
D:\Progra~1\Novastor\datacenter\Hiback\hiserv.exe
5. Click OK and exit the registry editor. The changes are in effect immediately.
6. Start the Hiback Service
This fix applies also to other services refusing to start with the same error message.
In step 2, instead of navigating to HISERV, navigate to the respective service name and change "Program Files" (or "Program Files (x86)" into the respective short pathname.
