OneDrive
There is a known issue since the 2017 Fall Windows Update whereby OneDrive files show differently on the local hard drive.
From Microsoft: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/learn-about-onedrive-files-on-demand-0e6860d3-d9f3-4971-b321-7092438fb38e
Windows Backup and File History are also unable to backup these files.
There is currently no known workaround within NovaBACKUP to perform an error-free backup/copy of the OneDrive directory.
The currently available options to backup or copy the files in a OneDrive folder are:
- In OneDrive Settings (Settings tab) UNCHECK the option "Save space and download files as you use them"
- Locate the tray icon for OneDrive, right-click on it, then choose Settings:
- NOTE: You may need to reboot for these changes to take effect, it can also take some time for the OneDrive Sync Client to make sure all files are now located on your machine.
- You can perform a file copy either manually or scripted (robocopy) to copy these files to another drive.
- Create a new backup job for your OneDrive folder with the option “Enable Open File Backup” UNCHECKED in the job settings (Don’t forget to remove your OneDrive folder from your other backup jobs!)
- NOTE: You will receive an error for at least 1 "system" file generated by OneDrive. This is safe to ignore. You can exclude this file from your backup jobs as well, please keep in mind this filename may change arbitrarily.
The rest of the selected files that are not showing any messages have been backed up without error.
MicrosoftEdge.exe
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\MicrosoftEdge.exe
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\MicrosoftEdge.exe
The difficulty you are having when attempting to backup these file(s) is specific to a recent Microsoft Windows Update in conjunction with Microsoft Edge.
These temporary / cache files are protected by the Operating System and unable to be backed up due to the way the system is utilizing them and how they are stored on the local hard drive.
You can either ignore the error message, or safely exclude the following folder containing them from your backup jobs:
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps
NOTE: The AppData directory (%LOCALAPPDATA%) is a hidden folder, to see it you will need to enable the viewing of hidden Files and Folders in Windows Explorer.
Another option is to clear the cache in the Microsoft Edge browser, this sometimes resolves this issue.
The message "Client file is busy, retry" indicates the file was open or protected when the job ran, and will be attempted again. If the file is still unable to be backed up, it will then be skipped and will be reported in the backup log.
Advanced Exclude Method
In the Default Settings for NovaBACKUP on the Advanced tab there is a button [Edit default exclude filter]. Help | Advanced Options Tab
Selecting this will open nsExc.ini
You will want to add this line to the file:
path.item.14=?:\%localappdata%\Microsoft\WindowsApps
You will also need to adjust line 11 to:
path.numberOfItems=15
Attached to this KB article is a default nsExc.ini
file with the lines added.
Below is the complete C:\ProgramData\NovaStor\NovaStor NovaBACKUP\Profiles\nsExc.ini
with the changes included:
;------------------------------------------------------------- ; ; This config contains the globally excluded items. With this ; list, the items listed will still show up in the selection ; trees but will not be selectable. Use with caution as this ; file will be updated with each update of the software. ; ;------------------------------------------------------------- [exclude] path.numberOfItems=15 path.item.0=%systemdrive%\pagefile.sys path.item.1=%systemdrive%\hiberfil.sys path.item.2=%systemroot%\debug path.item.3=%systemroot%\prefetch path.item.4=%systemroot%\temp path.item.5=?:\recycler path.item.6=?:\recycled path.item.7=?:\$Recycle.Bin path.item.8=?:\$RECYCLED path.item.9=*\ntuser.dat.log path.item.10=*\usrclass.dat.log path.item.11=?:\System Volume Information path.item.12=?:\ProgramData\TempDR path.item.13=?:\$Windows.~BT path.item.14=?:\%localappdata%\Microsoft\WindowsApps
The rest of the selected files that are not showing any messages have been backed up without error.
Problems with NovaStor LogCollector.exe
A Note about Windows Defender updates in recent versions of Windows 10
If you are experiencing trouble with the LogCollector terminating after asking for your ticket ID:
- Open Windows Security Dashboard
- Right click on Windows Defender Task Tray bottom right and choose "View security dashboard"
- In Windows Defender Security Center click on "Virus & threat protection"
- Click on "Ransomware protection"
- Switch off "Controlled folder access"
- Execute LogCollector.
Even if you add LogCollector to the whitelist ("Add an allowed app") Defender will block the LogCollector without changing this setting.
