Exchange plug-in backup error "failed to finalize staged file backup for this Exchange Server"
NovaBACKUP
Using the direct Microsoft Exchange plug-in contained in NovaBACKUP Business Essentials software requires Staging (caching) of all of the Exchange data, including the large .EDB data store files (by default the staging of the data goes to the C: drive) for any version of Exchange less than Exchange 2010. If your system has less free disk space than your total amount of Exchange data sums up to then you will not be able to complete a backup since it won't have enough free disk space to store the Staged Exchange data. Exchange 2010 and higher support direct backup without requiring Staging of data to a temp location (by default to C: drive). In your case you are less than Exchange 2010 and using 2007 SP3. You are also going to an SFTP function setup on a NAS and using SFTP which could have some sort of limit in it's own regards. First of all, know that we will have to Stage (cache) all of your Exchange database files so if the total of all of the Exchange database files are 30GB in size total for all of the databases used by the Plug-in to capture all of your Exchange data it is staging it and taking disk space on whichever drive partition that is default in your case, which is the C: drive by default. Meaning it has to make a cache of the D: Exchange files to C: in NovaBACKUP's Temp Files folder location, which is the default used by NovaBACKUP unless you change it, I.E. C: drive Temp Files location. You can go ahead and set the NovaBACKUP Temp Files location to D:\NovaTMP\ or something like this to support what you are trying to do and then inside NovaBACKUP create a new backup job with ONLY Exchange plug-in selected "Microsoft Exchange" and then set your Destination Storage Location to a locally connected storage medium, such as a USB external hard drive, in your case E: drive path or D: drive path if you have enough space to facilitate storing a complete Exchange backup to or NAS network device, not using SFTP, and re-try this new backup job test.
Most likely the C: drive, where the Temp files (Staging) go by default, is running out of space and causing that Staging issue, as by default the NovaBACKUP Temp/Staging files go to C: drive unless you change it in "Default Settings -> Advanced Settings -> Temp Files Location path. If your our C: drive, or the temp folder location setup in NovaBACKUP's Default Settings -> Advanced Settings screen, has less disk space than the total amount of Exchange data that is required to be Staged (cached) prior to backup by NovaBACKUP then you will receive a failure message during the backup "failed to finalize staged file backup for this Exchange Server". Choose a different partition for the NovaBACKUP Temp files location to setup NovaBACKUP's Temp folder to use that other drive or partition and re-try this same backup operation.
Error messages will look like this in the Exchange backup log if staging does not work because of free disk space issues, not enough storage to facilitate staging the Exchange data to the drive partition that it is set up to utilize for TEMP data:
