Setting up a disk pool for data storage

There are two types of pools:
- Disk pool
- GIR (Granular Item Recovery) disk pool
The GIR disk pool allows for access to individual files from a virtual machine during the VMware restore.

Requirements
The directory must have sufficient capacity (IDE, SCSI, FC, iSCSI) or the backup server must be able to access NAS volumes (network hard drive).
A disk pool operates within a directory to which the backup server must have read and write access.
Opening dialog
- 1. Go to Media Management > Storage Management.
- ⇨ The Storage Management window is opened.
- 2. Under Backup Servers, select the disk pool. In the shortcut menu, click Create disk pool.
- ⇨ The New Disk Pool dialog is opened.
Selecting pool type
- 1. Select the disk pool.
Entering name of disk pool
- 1. Enter the Pool name of the disk pool.
Prefix: alphanumerical (a – Z, 0 – 9), max. 4 digits.
Suffix: numerical (0 – 9), max. 4 digits.
Selecting directory to use as storage location for the backups
- 1. Select the directory with Directory > Browse….
- 2. In the Select Folder dialog, select the drive and the directory for the data storage.
The two attributes Name and Directory are sufficient to create a disk pool. However, you have the option to define additional attributes such as Schedule and Retention Periods.
- 1. Confirm by clicking [OK].
Result
The new disk pool disk.0001 is created and added to the Backup Servers > Disk Pools list.
Troubleshooting
Difficulties accessing network drives generally occur because the user does not have the required authorization. Access is managed via the accounts accessed by the services/processes. The relevant services here are "Hiback Service" and "NBK DC rcmd-executor".
