NovaBACKUP PC/Server/BE v19.x and newer (2019-08-22)
Symptom
You want to back up directories and files that are stored on a share.
The backup fails, you get different error messages, e.g.
"Resource is currently in use."
"Access denied."
Note
NovaBACKUP is designed for backing up local directories/files. Backing up files on shares is not covered by the regular NovaCare support. The NovaStor support can only support you during the configuration process with a chargeable service. Please request a quotation for a service.
Approaches
Technically it is possible to back up files from a share using NovaBACKUP PC/Server/BE. However, this is subject to some restrictions by Windows. For example, Windows cannot create shadow copies for files stored on shares. Thus opened files cannot be backed up. Therefore you should deactivate the option "Activate backup of opened files" in the settings of the backup job.
During the backup you will then receive a corresponding message for open files (e.g. "File in use, access not possible").
Another point for NovaBACKUP are the required full access rights to the files to be backed up. NovaBACKUP requires full access rights to source AND destination. You may search the NovaStor support webpage for the keyword "NAS" or "Share" (without "). This will result in a list of articles that describe how to configure access rights for shares as backup DESTINATION, e.g.:
https://support.novastor.com/hc/en-us/articles/360010920734-Access-rights-for-shares
You can apply these instructions to backup files FROM shares. However, you cannot use a NovaBACKUP network device (see article for description) as a backup source!
