Backup Failures After Installing Windows Update KB5083769: VSS Conflict Workaround
Symptom
Backup jobs that previously completed successfully are now failing/hanging after the installation of Microsoft Windows security update KB5083769. This update has been identified as introducing a conflict with the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), which NovaBACKUP relies on to create consistent backup snapshots.
Cause
Microsoft's security update KB5083769 contains changes that interfere with VSS writer behavior. Until Microsoft issues a corrected update, the recommended resolution is to uninstall KB5083769 and temporarily pause Windows Update to prevent reinstallation.
Important: This is a known compatibility issue introduced by the third-party update. NovaBACKUP support will update this article when Microsoft releases a fix.
Resolution: Uninstall KB5083769
- Navigate to Settings > Windows Update > Update History.
- Under Related Settings, click Uninstall Updates.
- Locate Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB5083769) in the list.
- Click Uninstall and allow the system to reboot when prompted.
- After the system restarts, return to Settings > Windows Update and click Pause Updates to prevent KB5083769 from being reinstalled automatically.
Note: Pausing updates prevents all Windows updates from installing during the pause period. Review your organization's patch management policy before doing so, and resume updates once Microsoft has addressed this issue.
After Completing These Steps
Run a manual backup job in NovaBACKUP to confirm that VSS is functioning correctly and that backups are completing as expected.
