What This Guide Does
After you rebuild or replace a computer with a different name and/or domain, this guide shows you how to access your old backups that are stored in NovaBACKUP Cloud Storage.
Why This Matters
NovaBACKUP organizes backups by computer name and domain. When you set up a new computer, the system won't automatically recognize the old backups. This guide reconnects your new computer to those existing backups so you can restore them.
Before You Start
You'll need:
- NovaBACKUP 21.x installed fresh on your new/rebuilt computer
- Your original license key
- Access to CMon (NovaBACKUP's management interface)
- Your CMon Server address and port number
- The exact Domain name and Computer name from your old machine (case-sensitive!)
Step 1: Install and Configure NovaBACKUP
- Do a clean install of NovaBACKUP on your new computer (no leftover data from previous installations)
- Activate it with the same license key as your original computer
- Go to Default Settings > CMon Server and enter:
- CMon Server address
- Port number
- Default group name
- Start the "Backup Client Agent" service
Step 2: Verify You Have Access
- Log into your CMon Server (the web interface)
- Go to Agents and Groups
- Find your new computer in the list and click View
- Make sure you see a Devices tab
- Check that you have permission to Add device (if it's grayed out, your user role doesn't have enough permissions)
Step 3: Connect Your Old Cloud Storage Device
- Click the Devices tab
- Click Add device
- For "Amazon S3 Compatible Device Type," select Existing Cloud Storage Account
- Click Next
- Select your existing cloud storage account and click Next
- Fill in the device details:
- Name: "NovaBACKUP Cloud Storage" (or whatever you want to call it)
- Domain: Enter your old computer's domain (exactly as it was, case-sensitive)
- Machine name: Enter your old computer's name (exactly as it was, case-sensitive)
- Click Add Device
Step 4: Import Your Old Backups
Once the device is added successfully:
- In the NovaBACKUP client, go to the Restore tab
- Click Import
- Select the "NovaBACKUP Cloud Storage" device you just added
- Wait for the import to complete
Step 5: Verify It Worked
- Go to Restore tab
- Expand Cloud Storage
- Expand your NovaBACKUP Cloud Storage device
- You should see your old backup restore points listed
Step 6: Test a Restore (Recommended)
Select one of your imported backups and do a test restore to make sure everything works.
Important: Getting Your Old Domain and Machine Name Right
This is the most critical step. Your Domain and Machine name must match your old computer exactly, including uppercase/lowercase letters.
To find these:
- On your old computer, open Control Panel > System
- Look for:
- Computer Name: This is your machine name
- Domain: This is your domain (use the short version, not the full domain name)
Note: Windows might show "sv" but NovaBACKUP might need "SV" (all caps). If the import fails, try different capitalizations of your domain name.
If Something Doesn't Work
- Make sure you installed NovaBACKUP cleanly (fresh install, not an upgrade)
- Verify you're using the exact same license key
- Check your CMon settings match your old computer
- Confirm your user role has "Add device" permission
- Double-check Domain and Machine name capitalization
