Issuing a Device Recovery Token in the CMon
Generate a one-time recovery token in the CMon so a rebuilt computer or recovery environment can retrieve its cloud storage device settings.
Applies to: NovaBACKUP Management Console (CMon) administrators, for NovaBACKUP 22 agents with a cloud storage device.
A recovery token lets a NovaBACKUP 22 computer, or its recovery environment, retrieve its cloud storage device settings from the CMon, including the secret access key and the backup encryption key. You issue the token in the CMon and give it to the person at the computer. They do not need to sign in to the CMon.
When to use a recovery token
- A computer was rebuilt or replaced, and its cloud device must be added again to restore its backups.
- A computer is being restored from recovery media, and the cloud device was not included in the media.
- Your customer's staff, or a technician on site, needs to reconnect to the backups without CMon credentials.
Prerequisites
- A CMon user account with permission to edit agents, and access to the agent's group
- The agent is listed in the CMon and has a cloud storage device configured
- The CMon is reachable over
httpsfrom the computer being recovered
Step 1: Generate the token
- In the CMon, open the agent.
- Select the Recovery Token tab.
- Select Generate recovery token.
- Copy the token with Copy to clipboard, and note the expiration time shown under Expires.
- Select Done.
Important: The token is shown only once. After you close the dialog, you cannot display it again. If you lose it, generate a new one.
How the token works
| Issued for | One agent. The CMon knows which computer it belongs to. |
| Valid for | 60 minutes from when it is generated |
| Use | Single use. A used or expired token is refused. |
| Format | 10 characters, shown in the form K7TQ2-9XBHM. The hyphen, spaces, and letter case do not matter when the token is entered. |
Step 2: Give the token to the person at the computer
Give them two things:
- The recovery token
- Your CMon address, starting with
https, including any virtual path, for examplehttps://cmon.example.com/BackupServer
Reading the token aloud over the phone works well. The recovery environment has no clipboard, so the person at the computer types the token by hand.
Step 3: What the person at the computer does
- In NovaBACKUP 22, or in the recovery environment, open Devices, select Recover device configuration, then select From a CMon.
- Enter the CMon address and the Recovery token, then select Redeem.
- Check that the computer name shown is the right one, then select Add device.
If the CMon holds more than one cloud storage device for the computer, the person at the computer chooses which one to add.
If the token is refused
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| The recovery token is not correct. | Check the token character by character. A single wrong character causes this message. |
| This recovery token has already been used or has expired. | Generate a new token in the CMon. |
| The certificate of the CMon could not be validated. | The recovery environment must trust the certificate authority that issued your CMon's certificate. If you use your own certificate authority, include its root certificate when you build the bootable media. |
| The recovery token was redeemed, but this agent has no cloud storage device configured. | The token has been used. Add the cloud device manually instead. |
Note: After too many attempts in a short time, further attempts are blocked for a few minutes. Wait, then try again with a correct token.
