Migrating a Legacy Job to a Local Backup or Cloud Backup Device

Recreate a job from a legacy device in NovaBACKUP 22 without a gap in your backups, plan for the new full backup, and decide when to delete the legacy data.

Applies to: NovaBACKUP PC Agent and NovaBACKUP Server Agent, version 22, upgraded in place from 21.x, with backup jobs on legacy devices.

Jobs on legacy devices keep running after an upgrade to NovaBACKUP 22, and you edit them in the Legacy NovaBACKUP UI. To bring a job into NovaBACKUP 22, recreate it on a Local Backup or Cloud Backup device. This article covers how to do that without a gap in your backups, how much extra storage it needs, and when you can delete the legacy data.

What You'll Learn

  • Which device to choose for each kind of legacy device
  • How to recreate the job and confirm it works
  • How much extra storage to plan for, especially on cloud devices
  • When it is safe to delete the legacy backup data

Prerequisites

  • NovaBACKUP 22 installed by an in-place upgrade, so the Legacy UI is available
  • Administrator access to the computer
  • Free space or cloud quota for a full backup of the job's selections
  • The credentials for any network share you will back up to

Choosing the new device

Legacy deviceDevice to create in NovaBACKUP 22
USB external drive, RDX, or local diskLocal or network storage device with a path on that drive, for example E:\Backups
Mapped network drive or network shareLocal or network storage device with the UNC path, for example \\server\share\Backups, and its credentials
TapeLocal or network storage device on an LTFS-formatted tape. See Tape Backup Support in Current NovaBACKUP Versions (LTFS Required).
Disc (CD, DVD, or Blu-ray), FTP, or NovaNet-WEBNo direct equivalent. Use a Local or network storage device or an Amazon S3-compatible Cloud device.

Step 1: Add the device

  1. In NovaBACKUP 22, select Devices in the menu.
  2. Add a Local or network storage device or a Cloud device.
  3. Enter the device settings. For a network share, NovaBACKUP 22 connects with the credentials you enter and adds the device only when the share can be reached.
  4. Set an encryption key of 10 to 30 characters if you want the backups encrypted, and store the key somewhere safe outside the computer. A lost encryption key cannot be recovered.

Step 2: Recreate the job

  1. In the Legacy UI, open the legacy job and note its selections, settings, and schedule.
  2. In NovaBACKUP 22, select Backup, then Create new backup from the backup job list.
  3. Enter a job name of up to 50 characters, and check the same selections as in the legacy job.
  4. Select the device you added in Step 1 as the destination.
  5. Configure the settings and schedule to match the legacy job. In NovaBACKUP 22, exclusions are called Filters and are in the job's settings.
  6. Select Save, then Start to run the first backup now.

Note: The first run of the new job is a full backup. Later runs are incremental.

Step 3: Confirm the new job, then stop the legacy job

  1. Check Job History to confirm the new job completed successfully.
  2. Restore a few files from it on the Restore page, or browse it on the Mount page, to confirm the data is there.
  3. In the Legacy UI, stop the legacy job by removing its schedule.

Keep the legacy job running until the first two checks pass, so there is no gap in your backups.

Storage and cloud quota

For a while, you store two copies of the same data: the legacy backups and the new full backup.

  • On a local device or network share, check that the new location has room for a full backup of the job's selections.
  • On a cloud device, the new full backup counts against your storage quota. If the account goes over quota, backups fail with error e0010024.

Important: If you move several jobs to the same cloud storage account, recreate them one at a time. Let each new job finish its full backup, then delete the legacy data for that job before you start the next one.

When to delete the legacy backup data

Delete the legacy backups for a job when all of these are true:

  • The new job has completed at least one full backup.
  • You have test-restored files from the new job.
  • The legacy backups are older than your retention requirement, or you no longer need to restore from them.

Until then, restore from the legacy backups in the Legacy UI.
