Working with the Legacy NovaBACKUP UI
Open the Legacy NovaBACKUP UI from NovaBACKUP 22, and learn which jobs you manage there and how the two interfaces share jobs and job history.
Applies to: NovaBACKUP PC Agent and NovaBACKUP Server Agent, upgraded in place from version 21.x to NovaBACKUP 22.
After an in-place upgrade, the Legacy NovaBACKUP UI stays linked from NovaBACKUP 22. Use it to open and edit the jobs that NovaBACKUP 22 does not edit. Your scheduled jobs run whether or not the Legacy UI is open.
What You'll Learn
- How to open the Legacy UI from NovaBACKUP 22
- Which jobs you manage there, and which you manage in NovaBACKUP 22
- How the two interfaces share jobs, settings, and job history
- What the messages about the Legacy UI mean
Opening the Legacy UI
There are two ways to open the Legacy UI:
- From the About page: In NovaBACKUP 22, select About in the menu, then select Open legacy interface.
- From a legacy job: When you select a legacy job on the Backup page, NovaBACKUP 22 shows an Unsupported backup job message. Select Open legacy interface in that message.
The Legacy UI opens in its own window and runs alongside NovaBACKUP 22. Only one copy runs at a time. If it is already open, selecting Open legacy interface again brings its window to the front. When you are done, close the Legacy UI window. NovaBACKUP 22 stays open.
Note: Open legacy interface is shown only on a computer that was upgraded in place. A clean installation of NovaBACKUP 22 does not link the Legacy UI. See Clean Install vs. Upgrade, and Reaching Legacy Image Data.
Which interface to use
| Task | Use |
|---|---|
| Create, edit, or run backup jobs on a Local Backup or Cloud Backup device | NovaBACKUP 22 |
| Set up full system recovery (a backup job with Disaster Recovery selected) | NovaBACKUP 22 |
| Restore files from a backup on a Local Backup or Cloud Backup device | NovaBACKUP 22, Restore or Mount page |
| Edit, stop, or delete a job on a legacy device, such as tape, FTP, or NovaNet-WEB | Legacy UI, or the CMon if the job was configured there |
| Edit, stop, or delete a legacy image backup job | Legacy UI only |
| Edit, stop, or delete a Copy job or Virtual Dashboard job | Legacy UI only |
Restore from a legacy backup, such as an .nbd file or a backup on a legacy device | Legacy UI |
| Check whether any job ran, including legacy jobs | NovaBACKUP 22, Job History or Dashboard |
How the two interfaces work together
- One engine, one set of jobs. Both interfaces use the same backup engine, settings, and jobs. A change saved in one interface appears in the other.
- Scheduled jobs run on their own. Jobs run on schedule whether or not either interface is open, and send their email notifications as before.
- One job history. Runs of legacy jobs appear in Job History and on the Dashboard in NovaBACKUP 22, so the Dashboard shows the status of all your backups. To change a legacy job, open it in the Legacy UI.
- Separate devices. Legacy devices are not listed in NovaBACKUP 22. If this computer has no Local Backup or Cloud Backup device, the Dashboard, Devices, and Backup pages say so and also show
Devices from the legacy interface can't be used here.Add a device on the Devices page to back up from NovaBACKUP 22.
Messages about the Legacy UI
| Message | What it means |
|---|---|
The destination device '<name>' is not supported by this application. Use the legacy interface to manage this backup job. | The job writes to a legacy device. Open it in the Legacy UI. |
This script contains a Copy job, which is not supported by this application. Use the legacy interface to manage this Copy job. | Copy jobs have no equivalent in NovaBACKUP 22. For Virtual Dashboard jobs, the same message names a Virtual Machine job. The message also appears for saved Verify, Retention, and Import jobs. |
This script contains a Disaster Recovery job, which is not supported by this application. Use the legacy interface to manage this Disaster Recovery job. | This is a legacy image backup job. Manage it in the Legacy UI, and replace it with full system recovery when you are ready. |
The legacy interface could not be found at '<path>'. | The Legacy UI files are missing from this computer. Contact NovaBACKUP Support. |
The legacy interface could not be started from '<path>'. | Windows did not allow the Legacy UI to start, for example because security software blocked it. Check your antivirus or endpoint protection logs, then contact NovaBACKUP Support. |
Best Practices
- Do not edit the same job in both interfaces at the same time. Save and close it in one before opening it in the other.
- Use the Dashboard in NovaBACKUP 22 as your daily check. It includes the runs of your legacy jobs.
- Plan to move your legacy jobs to NovaBACKUP 22 over time. See Upgrading from NovaBACKUP 21.x to NovaBACKUP 22 for two ways to do it.
