How to Change the NovaBACKUP Language Manually (All Versions)

Change the NovaBACKUP display language after installation by editing the LanguageId registry value.

This article explains how to change the NovaBACKUP display language after installation by editing the LanguageId registry value. It applies to NovaBACKUP 22 and 21.x.

NovaBACKUP supports twelve languages. Setup picks the language that matches the Windows display language, or English if there is no match.

Where NovaBACKUP stores the language

LanguageId is a DWORD value in these two keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NovaStor\NovaStor NovaBACKUP
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\NovaStor\NovaStor NovaBACKUP
  • NovaBACKUP 22 reads the value under HKEY_CURRENT_USER first, then the one under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then uses the Windows display language. Setup writes the value under HKEY_CURRENT_USER for the user who installed NovaBACKUP, so for that user you need to change both values.
  • The NovaStor NovaBACKUP Backup/Copy Engine service (nsService.exe), which writes the job logs, and the legacy interface (NovaBackX.exe) read only the value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

Change the language

  1. Close NovaBACKUP.
  2. Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe) as an administrator.
  3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NovaStor\NovaStor NovaBACKUP and double-click LanguageId.
  4. Select Hexadecimal, enter the code for your language from the table below (for example 407 for German), and select OK.
  5. If LanguageId also exists under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\NovaStor\NovaStor NovaBACKUP, change it there as well. Do this while signed in as each Windows user who has the value.
  6. In Windows Services (services.msc), restart the NovaStor NovaBACKUP Backup/Copy Engine service, so new job logs use the new language.
  7. Start NovaBACKUP again.

Note: Existing logs stay in the language they were written in. Only new logs use the new language.
