Will My Backup Jobs Work in NovaBACKUP 22?

Your existing backup jobs keep running after an upgrade to NovaBACKUP 22. Check which ones open in NovaBACKUP 22 and which you manage in the Legacy NovaBACKUP UI.

Applies to: NovaBACKUP PC Agent and NovaBACKUP Server Agent, upgrading in place from version 21.x to NovaBACKUP 22. The same applies to installations managed from a NovaBACKUP Management Console (CMon).

Yes. After an in-place upgrade, your existing scheduled backup jobs keep running on schedule. They appear in Job History and on the Dashboard and send their email notifications. What varies by job is where you open and edit it: in NovaBACKUP 22, or in the Legacy NovaBACKUP UI, which stays linked after an in-place upgrade.

Upgraded over several versions?

Important: If this computer was upgraded across several versions, for example from 16.x to 19.x to 21.x, and its backup jobs were never recreated, those jobs most likely still use legacy devices. They keep running after the upgrade to NovaBACKUP 22, and you open them in the Legacy UI. Check your devices with the steps below.

How to check which device your jobs use

In NovaBACKUP 21.x:

  1. Go to the Backup tab, open each backup job, and note the device shown as the destination.
  2. Go to the Device tab and find that device in the list.
  3. Check its device type. Jobs on Local Backup and Cloud Backup devices open in NovaBACKUP 22. Any other type, such as tape, FTP, NovaNet-WEB, USB external drive, RDX, or a mapped network drive, is a legacy device.

Opening a legacy job in NovaBACKUP 22

If you select a legacy job on the Backup page, NovaBACKUP 22 shows an Unsupported backup job message that explains why, for example:

The destination device 'Tape Drive 1' is not supported by this application. Use the legacy interface to manage this backup job.

Select Open legacy interface in the message to open the Legacy UI, where you can edit the job. This does not change the job. You can also open the Legacy UI at any time from About > Open legacy interface.

Clean installations

Everything above applies to an in-place upgrade. A clean installation of NovaBACKUP 22 on a new or rebuilt computer does not link the Legacy UI and does not install the image backup engine. If you need legacy functionality on a new installation, you can install NovaBACKUP 21.x with your NovaBACKUP 22 license key.

Your license

Your existing 21.x license key works with NovaBACKUP 22 if it is either:

  • A current subscription license, or
  • A perpetual license with valid NovaCare.

Any other 21.x license shows Upgrade required in NovaBACKUP 22. Contact NovaBACKUP Sales to upgrade it.
